Koen lives in intimate rhythm with the land, moving as the seasons turn, guided by a spiritual bond his people call "Country." To him and his kin, the land is not merely a possession or a resource but a living inheritance, a presence that sustains and teaches, shaping their identity as caretakers in an unbroken cycle of giving and receiving. Each day, Koen gathers what the earth offers, hunting kangaroos and emus, fishing in its waters, and collecting bush food, practices rooted in stories and traditions as old as the land itself. Yet, the deep wounds of colonization remain, displacement from their ancestral lands, the incursion of farming, mining, and urban sprawl severing many from their Country and the sustenance it provides. In the face of this disruption, Koen’s work to preserve language, art, and tradition becomes an act of resistance and renewal. Through festivals, dances, stories, and painting, his people’s culture thrives, a testament not only to their resilience but to the enduring truth that the land, when cared for and revered, holds the memory of those who belong to it.
