Hernandez was born into a place where music was not entertainment but inheritance. The rhythms of jazz, Africa, Spain, and the Caribbean were not studied or sought out; they came to him as naturally as air or water. A child could walk down a street and find the neighborhood alive with dance, with a harmony that bound people together.
Baseball held him for a time, the joy of it was in the company of friends, the play itself a way of belonging. But the deeper calling was music. The guitar gave him a language that was both his own and older than him, shaped by his island’s history. In the gathering of his small ensemble, in the response of his neighbors, and finally on the stage of the Havana Jazz Festival, his music bore witness to a heritage larger than himself yet made vivid through his hands.
