The story behind the art:

Nataana life with his Maasai tribe is traditional and hard by modern conventions. The land stretches before them, and they move where the cattle lead, maintained much of their ancestral way of life. Water is scarce, and the rains do not always come. But they are a proud people, and the cattle are everything. In the thin grass of the plains, life moves slowly. A man with cattle is rich, and a man without cattle is lost.

They move when they must. From one place to another, searching for the land that will hold them. But the land grows smaller and borders close in due to land privatization and conservation efforts limiting their range. The old ways do not fit the new world. The ceremonies and dances remain, but the land is not the same. It is not theirs anymore. And the cattle move less.

The world is changing, and the Maasai know this. Historically, education was not prioritized among the Maasai, but in recent years, many communities have begun sending their children to school. The fight to stay Maasai is a hard one. But they hold on to what they can. The cattle, the ceremonies, the stories passed down. They will remain Maasai, no matter what the world says.
